About UK Car Tax
Car tax in the UK (also known as Vehicle Excise Duty or road tax) is based on several factors, including:
- CO2 emissions
- Fuel type (petrol, diesel, alternative fuel, electric)
- Vehicle age and registration date
- List price (for vehicles over £40,000)
The tax system has different rates for the first year (based on CO2 emissions) and subsequent years. Electric vehicles are currently exempt from vehicle tax, but this is set to change from April 2025.
For diesel vehicles, those that meet the Real Driving Emissions 2 (RDE2) standard may qualify for lower tax rates.
Important changes coming in April 2025:
- Electric vehicles will no longer be exempt from vehicle tax
- EVs registered from April 2017 will pay the standard rate (currently £190)
- EVs registered between March 2001 and March 2017 will pay the lowest band rate (currently £20)
- The £40,000+ luxury vehicle surcharge will also apply to electric vehicles
